Back in 2003, my wife had had her green card for only 2 years and she got $6,000 in grants a $3,000 loan. So yes, you can get financial aid with a green card.

Instead of applying for student loan, apply for financial aid. With financial aid, you don't have to repay the money back. With student loans, you have to pay back the money with interest. With a GC you can apply for financial aid or student loan if you want. I am an asylee and received, $3000 financial aid per semester.

Hope this helps.

This is just out of curiosity.

But I thought that the reason we were required to have sponsors and/or co-sponsors was so that we wouldn't ask for any government aids?

Are you sure, 'cause I believe you have to be a PR for at least 5 years to be entitled for student loan, if not USCIS can go after your sponsor or co-sponsor.

The I-864 sponsorship period is either 40 social security credits (10 yrs of working) or until the person becomes a USC, dies, or permanently leaves the country.

The sponsorship itself only applies to government means-tested income. Student loans are not part of that system.

lol guys.... Peace be still.
Yes when once you get your conditional green card, you can get financial aide, loan, and grants from your college or the govenrment, but you will first have to file the FAFSA, when you file the fafsa, they will look at your previous tax returns or spouse returns and by that they will give you finacial assistance based on your financial needs. If you however do not qualify for financial aid, based on making too much money, they will also offer pell grant, loans etc with low interest rate just for students, but you must also be a fulltime student to be offered finacial aid at an accreditated US instituition.

For the time frame, if you become a Per resid. today, you can apply tomorrow,,,,lol.. 'cos it takes them a week to process it online, and send you and your school a breakdown of what they can offer you, after that its your descicion to either accept all the offers or just take the aid and grant , which you do not have to pay back, and reject the loans....lol
But hey, you will have to study hard and maitain atleast a CGPA of at leasta 2.2 or 2.5 to be able to renew it the following year till you graduate from school.

I TELL YOU IF NOTHING ELSE MAKES ME APPRECIATE THE US SYSTEM, THIS FINANCIAL AID THING AND COLLEGE LOANS DOES,,,,,,
knowing how hard it is to go to college or university where i come from...:)

Godisgoodtome:

I did not know that there was a difference between Student Loan & Financial Aid. So, you are saying that I can apply for Financial Aid and will not have to deal with USCIS afterwards.
If it it's true, I am very relieved.

If you have received your green card, then you are ellegible to apply for finacila aid, that is one of your benefits for becoming a US permenent residence.... so Thank God and start enjoying the fruits of your labor.:)
