A # ?

This may sound dumb. Please tell me: I did not see A# on my I140 approval letter. However, there is an A# on my I-485 reciept. Is that that the A #? Does it mean visa # was available?

Yes that is your A#. It will be their on EAD also.
However that is not the visa number. It is alien number.

Tammy : thanks for the reply. Can you please tell me the difference between A# & visa #. I have heard in some catergories there is a wait as there is no visa # available. And how can one find out if there is a visa # or not. My was EB1.

One uniquely identifies you as an alien; the other is used for numerical immigration limits.

Look at the visa bulletin at http://travel.state.gov. But with EB1 a visa number is almost always available.
