A trip to NYC DMV

Went to the counter gave my application to the lady she goes through the application and says to provide proof of id and immigration status. I gave her my I-94, CA Driver’s license, SS and grant letter from the judge. She went through those and said wait she needs to call the supervisor. The supervisor comes goes through the documents and says where is your passport I said I don’t have one then he said what about employment authorization I said I don’t need one. He looked pissed when I said that. Told me to sign and take my picture and wait for my number to be called.

Number comes up I go to the lady she goes through the application and then all the docs and says she needs to call the manager I said ok. The manager comes sees the documents and makes a phone call to her superiors and asks me where is your passport I said I never had one. The manager comes backs and says she will need to fax all my documents to Albany DMV (Headquarters) to get them verified and someone will get back to me, I said when she said she doesn’t know. She took my application and copies of all the documents and gave me a receipt and I left.

After 2 hours I get a call from Albany DMV and the guy says there is no problem with my documents and they are approved and said he doesn’t know why they sent me away in the first place. He said I could go back whenever I want and complete my transaction. So I go back right away and see the manager she sees me and says you are back pretty quick.

She did my eye test took the money and said you will have you license in 2 weeks.

Now the question is will I get a 1 year temporary licence with the red tag on it or a 5 year license I guess I will have to wait and see.

I dont know whats wrong with all this DMV staffs. You should not have waited for soo long.. You should get regular license valid for more than 5 years...

I didnt... I have my license in NYS since 2000, and it expired last year, so I went to the DMV showed them my asylum papers and they did renew my license but with the HUGE red tag on top saying temporary resident with an expiration date in red for 10/05. But the actual expiration date on the license (the small numbers) is for 2009.

I was in the same situation, and as soon as I received the ID valid for two years with red letters saying temporary resident, I came back and said that they did a mistake.
The supervisor called somebody and fixed it.
Since your license is valid for the same time as regular one, you are fine.
But people are always asking questions when they see "temporary resident", so I do not want anybody to bother me and changed it, it's worth to fix it.

I know... That what usually bother me... To explain why my license has the Temporary resident tag on it.

So do you have to renew your license every year now.

No, not every year... The license (like I said the expiration date in the bottom of the license is valid for 5 years) but on the top of the license is written in red TEMPORARY RESIDENT with the expiration date of 10/28/2005....
I hope that answers your question.

Then go and fix it, you are not a temporary resident.
That's enough for me to explain to everybody what asylum means, and dealing with such a mistake on the license would be too much.

Lucky what DMV did you go to to remove the red notification.

It is in Brooklyn, W8th St and Neptune Ave (Coney Island). There are a lot of immigrants in the area, so they know what they are dealing with, but anyway you need to push them and show them the exact words on I-94 that your status is valid indefinitely and letter from the judge and talk to the supervisor...

Just wanted to let you guys know that I received my DL today without the red stamp and is valid for 4 years.

Thanks

Ed
