A# on I-485 receipt differs from previous one on OPT EAD?

Dear All,

I just received my I-485 receipt notice. However, I noticed that the A# on it is different from my previous one (obtained when applied for OPT). Am I supposed to get a new A# or is this a serious mistake? Thanks a lot for your comments.

I did some search and found this thread that contains some interesting discussion about A# on the I-485 receipt.

http://www.immigrationportal.com/showthread.php?t=138530&highlight=number

My previous number was obtained through OPT and has 9 digits (A1xx-xxx-xxx). The new number is 8 digits. maybe (according to ginnu's discussion), I am supposed to get a new (persumably permanent) A#. Can anyone who has similar situation share his/her experience? Thanks a lot.

I am going to talk to my attorney and will post her comments.

Hi
You won't have an A# when you apply for OPT

A# mean Alien Registration# Green Card is also called Alien Registration Card

May be they made a mistake while printing the OPT card

I-485 EAD comes under category C9
OPT comes under category c3

Are you sure? because I did get a 9-digit "A#". I used that in my I140 petition and it appeared above my name in the I140 receipt notice. However, I agree that this number is probably different from the number that you are referring to. The number that I get on the I485 is probably the actual/permanent Alient Registraton Number. Am I right?

A # must be same on 140,485,AP,EAD etc...if urs different?

in the link above, one of the posts is mine. I had A# from OPT EAD, and filed my AOS and AOS EAD papers using it. ALL AOS receipts had my old A#, but my new AOS EAD card arrived with a new A#. Don't know what to do about it, and I am inclined to do nothing.

LucyMO, is the A# on your new EAD (from AOS) an 8-digit one? My previous A# is from OPT EAD and has nine digits (A1xx-xxx-xxx). The new A# on my I-485 and I-765 receipt notices is 8-digit. Ginnu's illustration of A# sounds convincing and can explain why a new A# will be assigned to replace the 9-digit A# from OPT EAD. However, when the new A# will be assigned is not clear. Probably in your case, it is assigned upon approval of AOS EAD while in my case it is assigned upon receive of AOS application. Really hope that this is not another mistake of USCIS.

Put a 0 before 97 and be happy - that is your A#.

I had the A number from OPT, and I got the different A number when I field I485. Don' worry about it...I think there are different kinds of A number, such as temporary or permant numbers.

Same here. Different A# on OPT (which is not your real A#, but just some ID number they put to ID you) When you get 485, you get a real A#

talked to my attorney this morning. She does not know any better than the gurus here. :(

Thanks you guys for sharing and I feel much more comfortable as this happened before and seems to be normal.
