Should
1) The total number of days outside USA be less than 6 months, or
2) Should the total number of days in 1 trip be less than 6 months

to avoid problems with N400?

The total # of days I was abroad the past 5 yrs might be appox 150 (no trip over 35 days)

Thanks

A single trip should be under 6 months in order not to break continuous residency. A total of 159 days outside US in 5 years is fine.

Curious to know if this is written somewhere in some USCIS document. I didn't find it mentioned anywhere.

Wanted to know if there is a limit on the total number of days 1 can be outside the USA in 5 yrs.

Well, you have to be IN the US for AT LEAST HALF of the 5 years right before you apply, which is about 913 days or so?

Continuous residency requirement is covered in the naturalization guide, INA 316(b), 8 CFR 316, and 8 USC 1427:

The document mentions that "30 months physical presence in USA" is needed

Does it mean the total number of days outside USA alllowed is 30 months (900 days) providing no single trip is more than 180 days?

Just trying to ensure that it is alright if the total # of days outside USA turns out slightly more than 6 months (180 days)

Technically, if the trip lasts for more than 6 months, you have to prove to USCIS that you did not break continuous residence. If you can explain to them why you were out for more than 6 months, then they may understand. They also may not.

As for the total time, yes, 30 months is what you can spend outside the US, but the fewer, the better.
