5 year anniversary (after GC) is for interview date or Oath Date? I have applied for Citizenship with a name change. I was just curious to find if they give flexibility for the Interview date the way they do for Fingerprinting (my letter says - I can go any wednesday after Nov 4th) so that I don't go before my 5th year anniversary. Also, I don't think same day oath is possible in my case as I'm applying for a name change.

Please share your knowledge/experience.

Some IOs will allow you to take interview before 5th year anniversary, but you can only take oath once you reach 5 year anniversary mark.
You can't do a walk in for an interview as you can for a FP.

It seems to depend on the DO. Do some searching and reading here and you will find...

1: At the end of a successful interview they will say they will approve you when the 5 years date comes due.

2: They will schedule the Oath date to be after the 5 year date comes due.

3: They will deny the application and keep the money and make you re-apply and pay again. You could probably contest that one with an Infopass and speak to a supervisor or send a letter to the Ombudsman.

I have read about all 3 results.

The third option looks realistic. I guess i will forfeit my $695 dollars and had to reapply because my interview is 27 days short of 5th anniversary. I made a mistake applying early I guess.

My Q is--If you have applied with in 89 days before actual 5 yr.GC date(As allowed by CIS) and if CIS schedules(not you) interview date before 27 days of 5 years, why you should loose money??How you are held for it?

You would only loose your money if the IO incorrectly applied the process and denied your case under such a circumstance, and you didn't appeal it right away. There's no cost to appeal if you can show the USCIS is at fault.

oath letter

Hi Novacitizen,
My interview date is 12/14/09 (1 week before my 5th anniversary) at Fairfax.
It looks you got Oath after your interview passed. Did they send the oath letter by mail or gave you on the same day of interview? Could you please update me.

Thanks

By mail unless your 5 year is next day or day after.

Thanks for the update. But if you see user NovaCitizen dates, he was interviewed on 10/14/09 and Oath taken on 10/21/09 (exactly one week after his interview). How could it possible if he got it in mail? Just curious!!

If you read his experience, he was proactive and got his officers number. The day of his 5 year anniversary, he called the io to see if he can pickup his oath letter which he did. That's why he tookthe oath in a week. You can ask the officer that if you can pickup your oath letter when your anniversary is up? Your mileage may vary as it depends on the officer. Sense his mood
& see if you can pickup the oath letter.
