2 years residency question

Hello,
We are approaching our 3 years time outside Canada and we are going to move in April of 2008. My question is, are we obligated to stay in Canada for 2 years consecutive to avoid losing our PR or are we allowed to take short trip vacation to Europe let's say.

If you return after 3 full years, then you need to stay in Canada for a full two years with no overseas trips. If you return after 2 years and 10 months, you can take 2 months of overseas trips in the next 2 years and 2 months. You get the idea?
