2-year home country residence

If my J-1 expires and I am subject to 2-year home country residence requirement, can I go to other countries instead of my home country? Do I need to show any evidence of residence to the immigration officials when I reattempt to enter US after 2 years?

if you reentering on a non-immigrant visa you don't need to fulfil your HRR.

If you attempt to get H1, L1 or an immigrant visa, you will have to show proof of residency in your home country to the consular officer.
