Go to www.uscis.gov and register yourself. Once registered, you can add case numbers to your portfolio. There you will be able to see the last update date.

My Last update changed on mine and my wife's EAD on 05/11/2004 and nothing has been heard from INS. I have not yet recd any emails. Also my H1 extension got updated on 05/10/2004 and also nothing has been heard from INS and no emails too.
