As long as the company that sponsored your H1B sends out documents to you stating that they still have the position open for you, I think you are good to go!

Generally a beneficiary requesting for a COS, should be present in the country until a decision is reached! Going out of country means the beneficiary is no longer interested in pursuing the COS. I maybe wrong, but this is what I know!
if your H1B gets approved before your OPT, your status will be H1B! Also, keep in mind that since at the time of applying for your H1B(April) you would not have graduated, so make sure you apply based on your previous highest degree and not the current incomplete degree!
