Not that I care too much about this- but this is waht I was told a year ago by my university's lawer. If the guy did not lose his H-1 status, the better for him. I my case I did not have any reason to apply for EAD, so i have no personal experience.

The lawer is right. Once you got EAD you lost your H-1. The plus of your changing the status is that now you can look for a second job on the open market. The minus is that if , God forbid, you have trouble with I-485, you will be out of status.
