We had a similar experience. The A# on my I-485 receipt notice and my EAD were different. The Officer at the FP office, contacted NSC and fixed the problem. The A# on my EAD is right.
Another way to figure out which one is correct is , yours and your wife\'s should be in sequence...
I spoke to the Customer Service Rep at NSC. Only Asylee 485 petitions will not be processed until October 2001 and employment 485 petitions will be processed as before.

I spoke to an Immigration office and got the following information :
Only Asylee cases of I-485 have been put on hold until October,2001
and not Employment based 485 petitions.

No where in my post did I mention that everyone should call.If there is a need for someone to call INS, it would be easier to get the call through.

If you don\'t get your work permit (EAD) after two months of filing you I-485, you can go to the local INS office with the recipt notice and get the EAD card on the same day.
