It may sound philosophical, but don't worry too much about the FP. I got mine in April 04 even though I filed in December 2003. And to be honest I didn't care...because it will not expedite your process any way. Makes sense?
As mentioned in the FP notice, Passport is just one of the means of Identification. For your peace of mind carry your H1 extension approval. They know it all.
You can get your visa stamped in India easily with all the paperwork. Please be noted that your AP application will be invalidated once you go out of US. Not a big deal considering your situation. You will have to spend money again to apply for AP...

Actually the H1 and H4 extensions were applied when both of us were here in the US. We went to India just for a one month vaccation in mid of July. So both our extension applications are pending.
