Ask your lawyer to send a copy of your reciept notice to INS. Also ask them to write a letter to INS specifying the status of the result you get after checking online.

Definately, Consular processing is very much faster. But you have to keep track of processing since you have to back and visit your country for stamping. I don't have any more details other than this.
