My F1 Visa got expired in October 2021. Since than my parents came to US in 2023 but i haven’t went back to India. Right now I am on STEM OPT that is expiring in Jan 2026. Applying in universities for masters for Jan 2026. I want to go to India to get engaged, is it a good idea to apply for F1?

I didn’t go to India because I was working on a big project, I am a mechanical engineering (hands on) so I can’t even work remote.

You follow the news about what is happening with F1 visa appointments?
what status are your parents on? Though appears to be unlikely to be of immediate help even if they are somehow citizens as you are presumably over 21.

I meant to say, My parent came here on B2, and left after 5 months, which is why I never went back to India, now I don’t have a f1 visa beacuse it got expired in October 2021. Last time I went to India was 2020.

I want to get engaged which is why I need to go to India but don’t have F1. My STEM opt ends in December so I got some time. But given my situation, would you recommend traveling to India for F1 Renewal?

Did you read the news link posted above? If they’re not holding any interviews for F1 visas how do you expect to get a visa? When are you planning to go? It seems undetermined as to when they may start again.

I am planing to go in December. My concern is, since I haven’t been back to India in a while, will that be a problem?

You don't seem to get the actual issue Susie has been trying to point out to you. Your concern should be will you be able to apply for a new visa to enable you return? since you currently do not have a valid F1 visa for returning.

I understand Susie completely, I am not worried about not being able to have an appointment because that is not in my control. What I can control is, should I even try to get F1 visa or not if appointments are back up. If appointments are not open, I can’t go to India anyway

I am a little confused at your circumstances tbh. You say your stem OPT is up in December, which is when you are planning to go to India. What would the F1 be for, then?

I am planning to go India around December. I am starting masters from January 2026 so I am hoping to go India before that but in-order to return back I’ll need F1 stamp
