Question about dv2016 application

Hi I'm an irish citizen who lives in Northern Ireland, I was born in the North..when selecting which country I qualify through does it matter? If I select Northern Ireland or Republic?? As far as I'm aware I qualify for both?? I see that in recent dv lotterys more people from Republic of Ireland have been selected than Northern Ireland so in theory I would have a better chance if I declared Republic of Ireland...any thoughts?? Thanks in advance

Your eligibility is based on place of birth, so unless your mother was straddling the border during delivery, you do don't qualify as both.

Also "more people selected" = higher chance is not correct.

If 500 people enter in Ireland and 100 get chosen, but 75 people enter in N Ireland and 70 get selected, this does not mean you stand a higher chance of being selected in Ireland because it has more selectees....

It doesn't make a difference trying to calculate which has better odds, because as simon correctly states the OP can't choose, but  I'm too pedantic to let this comment pass without saying anything :p

He had me at "born in". :p:D

The reason I asked was because of the complicated history of the island of Ireland I was born in the North and at the time of my birth the republic still laid claim to the north thus anyone born on the Island of Ireland is eligible for a Irish Passport, wasn't sure whether place of birth and citizenship meant the same thing in regards to dv instructions....but I shall put down Northern Ireland I suppose if I'm gonna get picked I'm gonna get picked! Thanks anyway best of luck to all who are entering this year! This is my 4th in a row but 7th or 8th in total! Thanks
