Required Documents

Dear All

I am a DV2013 winner, my interview is in July and I have started collecting the required documents for the interview. I do have a few issues though, I left my country (Syria) 15 months back due to the political situation, before I left I took with me birth certificates for myself and my husband as well as our marriage certificate, will those documents be accepted at the interview although they were issued around 18 months back?

on a different note, there are two required documents in the website, one is court and prison records and the other document is police records... I have not heard of such documents in my country, we have a document called the "non-convicted document", would that be sufficient, or should I stick to the list.

Hello Alissar,

The civil documents you have at hand (marriage certificate, birth certificates et al.) are acceptable for your interview as they do not have a validity/expiry period.

Court and prison records would only be applicable if you appeared in court and had a conviction so you need not worry about these.

A police certificate is required however I am not certain about a non-convicted document but it sounds equivalent to a police certificate. If you can get a police certificate it would be better however I am certain other forum members will also shed some insight on this...

The birth and wedding certificates are fine to be old - if you think about it the birth certificate presented is often the original - i.e. as old as the person! So your recent copies are still valid.

For the other forms have you checked the Syria specific page http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_5455.html?cid=9712

It sounds like you can work with a local embassy to get the forms you will need - and yes try very hard to get exactly what is listed.

Don't forget that you might need certified translations of your documents into the local language where you will be doing the interview.

I actually don't think so. The requirement is to have certified translated copies of documents in local/other language into English, the documents do not need to be translated into the local language CP is taking place.

Oh really Sm1smom?

"All documents not in English, or in the official language of the country in which application for a visa is being made, must be accompanied by certified translations."

I take that to mean that if you are doing CP in France (for example) and present documents in Arabic (from Syria) that you would need to have the docs translated to French or English. I'd be pleased to find that is not the case as my wife is from Spain and we will do cp in London or aos.
 
Ahhh re-reading my earlier comment I should have stated English or the local language - I see why you picked that up....

If you are going to have them translated at all English would be the best bet, although might add complexity if you are in a country with another language...

My understanding in the above scenario is that it is enough to have certified English translated copies of the documents which are originally issued in Arabic, they do not need to be translated into French.

Yes - either English or French.
