Question about registration in Selective Services

Me and my husband started our citizenship process in october and we now received our interview letter(Timeline in the signature). I have a question regarding an item there.

The interview letter for my husband says that he needs to get letter of registration in Selective Services. He came to US when he was 25 and half years old on non-immigrant visa. So, he never registered in selective services as he was NOT an IMMIGRANT before age 26. Did anyone have similar situation or have any suggestion for me. Will this cause any issues during interview?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Your husband was not required to register for Selective Service. The IO will be able to determine that based on his immigration history. Since your interview is coming up in less than 3 weeks, Selective Service won't be able to process the letter in time for the interview. Make sure your husband takes his non-immigrant visa to the interview, in case the IO wants to see it. That will suffice.

Should not be a problem since he became a permanent resident after the age of 26.

He didn't have to register, but becoming a permanent resident after 26 doesn't necessarily mean being exempt from registering. Men who were out of status in the 18-26 age range were also required to register.

As far as I know, if you in US on nonimmigrant visa during 18-26 you are not required to register. And if you got GK after 26 you can't register, but you can have a letter from Selective Service stating that you didn't register because not required. Take your passport with the nonimmigrant visa when you entered to US, that will show your status during that period. Hope this info is right, if anyone knows differently please correct me.

This is correct and the OP is fine. Check the below chart from the Selective Services website which explicitly indicates that if you are on a non-immigrant visa between the ages 18-26, you do not have to register:

A friend of mine was in this category; i.e., he entered the US before the age of 26 on a student visa. He got his greencard after he was 26 and he recently got naturalized. The selective service issue never came up during his interview.

He probably was over 31 by the time he applied for naturalization, so that's another reason why the interviewer didn't bother to ask about Selective Service.

Thanks for the responses. All the responses were very useful and informative. We will take the passport with visa and H1 petition during that timeframe.
