Hello All,

Not sure if anyone can actually relate to our situation. I am from Bangladesh where there is no process/system/law/Act to register Hindu marriages. There is also no government form to issue marriage certificate for Hindu marriages (at least this is what I was told by the City Corporation officials). I got my I-485 approval and the green card (employment-based), but my wife got an RFE that she needs to submit a memorandum of marriage and govt. issued marriage certificate. We submitted a notarized affidafit with the i-485 petition, but apparently it did not work. Let me know your thoughts on this and what documents we should submit.

Thanks.

Ask in the Family-Based Green Cards section. Although this is not exactly a family-based case (your wife is a derivative to your employment-based GC?), it is a common scenario involving Hindu marriages in India and Bangladesh, and you're more likely to get an answer in the family-based section of the forum.

------------- One needs Marriage registration with the City Corporation: A marriage certificate issued by a City Corporation registrar office prepared on a standard, government-printed form. Your wife can get it from City Corporation.

Marriage Certificate

Available. According to Bangladeshi civil law, all marriages in Bangladesh require registration with the appropriate Marriage Registrar. For Muslim marriages, the applicant should contact the Kazi office or the registrar who solemnized the marriage to obtain the marriage certificate and the Nikah Nama (Bengali and English version). Both the marriage certificate and the Nikah Nama (Bengali and English version) must be submitted to the Consular Section.

In the absence of specific Bangladeshi governmental instructions regarding Hindu/Buddhist/Christian marriage registrations, Embassy Dhaka accepts either of the following documents.

* Marriage registration with the City Corporation: A marriage certificate issued by a City Corporation registrar office prepared on a standard, government-printed form.
* Certification from a Priest/Church/Temple: A marriage certificate issued by the priest who solemnized the marriage or the administration of the Church/Temple where the marriage was solemnized. The format for these documents may vary.

The above documents must contain information regarding the wedding ceremony and the information concerning the identity of the person registering the marriage.

Embassy Dhaka will not accept affidavits of marriage from applicants, relatives or friends.
