After Citizenship - what documents to keep?

I am tired of carrying tons of documents from H1 to GC and all the proofs that go with it. After USC, can I shred all these docs and be in peace?

How about buying a digital scanner, scan all those documents and keep electronic copies in a hard drive, couple of flash drives (keep one in a safe deposit), and proceed to shred them with a super shredder? Who knows what the GOP is going to do when they are in power, we might be required to keep all our immigration paperwork with us, or risk deportation...

If anything, USCIS has an archive records of all your information, but you should always have a digital copy, especially if your paperwork is starting to weigh about 20lbs..

If I were you, I would keep all the documents. Who knows when you might need them. It is not that you need to carry all of them, just archive it and keep it safe.

Also for say, if you were to have a baby in a foreign country, you need to show that you resided in US for 5 years (after age 14) to claim US citizenship for your new born.

Your citizenship is subject to revocation if there are material discrepancies found in your citizenship or green card process, so there is still a remote chance of you needing those documents to defend yourself and show that your path to citizenship is legitimate.

The requirement has been dropped to 2 years after age 14 (but 5 years overall). Although Congress can increase it at any time.

It would be better to keep the originals of certain documents, like visas and approval notices. If they are ever going to be needed in order to defend the legitimacy of one's path to citizenship, having the originals would be much more convincing, especially if the reason for your immigration history being under attack is because USCIS lost some of your files.

Shred everything except a copy of your green card. Of course, keep all previous passports. You have a better chance at winning a lottery than finding a need for those documents.

The chance to use any of old doument is neglegibly mimimal, but unless you do not even have a home, the cost of keeping them is also minimal.

I would agree to still keep them too as above...but why does Al southner have to bring the GOP and politics to this question?

Do you think every immigrant is a democrat?

Please stay clear of politics and post only on facts.

And for your info, am neither a democrat or republican.

Thanks

You don't have to be ashamed of you drink the Sean Hannity Kool Aid...

If you haven't being paying attention lately, the GOP is the party of bashing and screwing immigrants, especially people from Latin America. If you are from Western Europe, overstaying your visa and finding a job at Whole Foods, then you are a good person as per their strategy (GOP). I happen to be an independent.

Thats your own opinion. And I respect that...but this forum is devoid of politics...so please keep it free from your politics. If you want to talk politics, go to huffington posts and fox news and other political blogs and site.

I called you out, because this is not the first time you have brought politics to this board.

You can claim to be an independent all you want, but you sure don't sound like one.

Thanks
