If you're proficient in both languages you can translate it yourself and attach a sworn declaration stating that you are able to translate accurately. There's no need to spend extra money or go to an embassy if you're capable of translating it yourself.

Given the already spotty situation of the OP's documents (no GC, no passport, etc.), it would be a good idea to get it done by a credible third party instead of risking more doubt into the situation with a DIY translation.

And how exactly does missing/lost documentation lead to a loss of translation credibility? The translation requires a sworn statement of the proficiency of the translator which is evaluated on its own merits rather than that of missing documentation for a N-600.

One doesn't lead to the other. A translation from a recognized third party carries more credibility than a self-done translation. The OP is in a position of having to rely on a cobbling together of documents that may require discretionary evaluation by USCIS; if there already is a bit of a credibility problem due to issues/gaps/expiration of some identification documents, it's more important to provide maximum credibility on the other things.
