What to get insteof utility bills if they ask???

Hi everyone,

Thank you for doing a place like this.

I've been a LPR for 5 years. I already filed on March. My wife and me have been renting a room in a home during the 5 years. I don´t have any utiliy bills. I broke my bank staments, I mean I don´t have the bank staments for the 5 years, only I have some bank staments. My wife and me have bank accounts jointy but in the staments we receive only have the name of one of us. Credit card comes under my name.

I don´t know what to show if they ask me for utility bills or something to proof I have living in my current residence with my wife jointly.

How did you file, under 3 year rule or under 5 year rule? I think depending on that you will have to certain papers.
If you filed under 3 year rule (marriage to USC) then you have to show proof that you and your spouse have joint life (joint accounts, bills, taxes and etc)
If you filed under 5 year rule (LPR for 5 years), then I dont think you need to show proof of joint life. However, depending on how you've obtained your LP Residency, they might ask you for some docs to show joint life, so take whatever you can to the interview

Thanks for your answer.

I filed under 5 years rule. The payment we made for rent we didn´t receive any receipt. We usually paid with check and lately with online transfer.
Do you think that it should be fine to get an affidavit from the renter showing we have been leaving there jointly for the 5 years??. Whe have a good relationship with the renter.

If you are applying under 5 year rule you only need State Id/ driver's license. Keep your tax record for 5 years, in more than 95% of cases IO never ask whether you have them. If you have been away from USA keep records with you. After the Civics/English tests, mostly IO goes over your N-400 and asks question relevant to that only.

I went to visit my family only for 20 days in 5 years . It is embarasing but I´ve been without working for 1 year. Mi wife have been working all the time.I got account transcript for 5 years. Is it ok even I´ve without workinf?.

With this tough economy, I think many people are unemployed, so I dont think it is going to be a problem.
They just want to make sure that you are a person of good moral character, and a good indicator of which is filing taxes every year, even if your wife claimed you as her dependent in her tax report, they just want to see that you have been complying with the law.
Also, you can obtain a letter from your landlord, signed and notarized (if possible), and with landlord's address and number. Although, I doubt they would ask you about your joint life with your spouse, still take just in case.
From what I have read on this and other forums, dont volunteer any information and just answer the IO's questions, and make it short and clear. So, if they dont ask you about some papers/docs, probably they dont need them.
Again, just gather as much as possible, and take everything you could find with you in a envelope/folder, and answer honestly to questions.

They may ask how you have been supporting yourself during the last year, but other than that you should be fine. There's no reason for them to ask for utility bills if you are applying based on 5 year rule.

For bob, do you think should be fine with the tax account transcript to show proof of supporting myself??. Do I need to show something else??. We don´t have bank staments. The only thing we have is the car registration card under both names, some paychecks of my wife and the letter of job offert. Any advice??

We are in the same bank account, but we have 2 accounts. I received the bank staments under my name only and in the other account we received bank statements under my wife´s name. so I was thinking to get a letter from my bank regarding to our jointly account.

For lolito, the letter you say from my landlord, you mean an affidavit of something like that. Could you please explain me a little more?.

Disclosing that you are being supported by your working wife while you are not working should be sufficient evidence.

Did you collect unemployment?
