Is it must to cancel indian pasport before applying for OCI card?

Folks,

I recently became a USC and am planning to apply for the OCI card. My question is do we must cancel the indian passport before applying for the OCI card?

If so, can I cancel the passport at the time of applying for the OCI card (assuming applying in person at the indian consulate)?

You can get your passport canceled at the time of applying for OCI card - simply send your indian passport along with your OCI application and it ill be canceled and returned to you.

If sending OCI application to NYC then dont send Indian passport with OCI application(send only Copy). when you collect OCI they will stamp "Canceled" on Indian passport and return to you.
