Hi,

I asked this question last time also. But I am still not sure what to do. I use my short name at some places. I am not sure if I should write it in Other Names used. I have included it and then deleted it and then included and then deleted in preparing the N400 package. I am planning to send my application and any last minute thoughts. Please bear with me. I have been in a lot of tension because of this issue so I am posting to get one more tiem the opnions. Sorry if some people feels that I am trying to spam the forum. Please understand my mind set and I am feeling a lot of presure thinking plus and minus.

thanks

Hello

I have used my short name in many places as my long first name does not fit
To be on safer side, I put my short name along with lastname and middle name in "Other Names" on my N400 application.
I'm not sure if I'm correct or not.

You were correct.

I don't know why emno is worrying about this so much. List the other name and stop stressing about it. It's a problem if you DON'T list it and then USCIS finds out about it.

Thank you mike_inus so very much.
My case is excectly same as yours. Thank you, thank you.
Did you face any issues in N400 process by putting your short name in other names.
ExampleFirst Name: Om
Middle: Prakash
last: Mathur

This I put in legal name.

In other names:

First: OP
Last: Mathur
Middle: BLANK.

as work places and my official email have teh short name like OP Mathur.

I am sending my application today. And I have been debating on this over and over again.
Did you face any problems using short name in N-400?

Thanks

Well if you look at my signarture, my interview is on coming monday - 12th April
Let see if there is any issue with my short name.

I have a nickname that I sometimes use, too, mostly on name-tags and in the "What would you like to be called" box in forms, but I didn't include it. I pondered this issue a lot, and I felt that by "other names," CIS meant a completely different name. I have never officially registered for anything with my nickname. Should I mention this at the interview, or did they want that for the namecheck?

For the name check, the FBI will already implement their own shorterning/varying of your name if it is a name with commonly-known variations in the US, such as William -> Bill, Jeoffrey -> Jeff, Alfred -> Al, Edward -> Ed, etc. So if you have a name like that it shouldn't make a difference whether or not you include the short name.

But if you have a nickname or short name that is not one of those common variations, and you have used it in any formal capacity including work or school (in addition to the obvious government documents like DL or passport), they'll want to know about those names you used, and you could get in trouble if they find out about that name and you didn't list it, as they'll suspect you're trying to hide something by not revealing the other name(s).

You guys are great. I will include it now. I have been printing 1st page of N400 20 times, once with and then without short name. I wanted to find out if even single person in the forum have done this and now I am happy to learn that mike_inus did it so I thought doing it. Thanks mike_inus I plan to send it today so I will be in the same boat as you are.

To Jackolantern,

I have not used it where my SSN is needed but in office i use the short name and it is basicaly initials First Letter of the first name First letter of teh second name and full last name.
My job records have my full legal name so is DL or any other govt documentation. The only place I used it is for prepaid phone and daily office uses.

You printed the first page 20 times? I would have thought twice would suffice, one with and one without your short name... hehe. I guess I'll mention it during the interview. My name is NOT Western, nor is it common.

20 times means: I decided to npt to include it and stapled my application. Then again I thought that let me ver over honest and include it so I printed the 1st page again and stapled. I am working on this for last 1 week and was not able to decide. getting ready to post but change in last minute. It was unnecessary tension, which i carried for 1 week.

OK. Now past is past.
Did you get chance to mail your N400 or still busy with printing :) just kidding

Wish you all the best for your naturalization journey.

thanks mike_inus

I have done my final printing. Then I read about the explaination for Q1 thru 14. One places it says that if i answer yes to affiliation, i need to give explainations. I wrote some descriptions of the clubs/associations i am member of. Now question is if to include or not.
