state ID/DL requirement for interview

Hi - I just received a yellow letter stating that the documentation required to bring for the interview is "state id or drivers license". I have yet to receive my interview letter/date and I just get my finterprints taken a few days ago.

it just says : "Bring your state-issued driver's license or state-issued photo identification card"

I don't have a state ID or drivers license -> I actually never needed one, it was never a requirement and I do not drive/never drove a car - no need as I can get by without one. I never got a state Id because even buying a house, getting a loan and everything else worked just having the greencard/passport.

So I am thinking I should go apply for a state ID on Monday at the local dmv but that might take time to get. I have lived in this town for 12 years (since I moved here) and have plenty of proof that I live here, tax statements, paycheck address, bank account address, utility bills, loan etc etc.

So if I would not get my state ID in time, would this be a real issue ? anyone else have this problem ? Seems kind of silly but like I said, just never needed one.

thanks for any one that had something similar - btw local office for interview is San Francisco.

Why are you making things complicated for yourself? All your other evidence is valid like utility bills, mortgage etc etc. But when a simple state ID will show that you are a resident of the state...why put a doubt in the IO's head by showing him all this evidence.

Getting a state ID takes maybe few hours not days. Go get one and stop worrying about carrying all your other "state residence" proof with you.

yeah i plan to on monday - dmv says can take 6 weeks and I guess my main worry is that 1) it will be a new ID and not proof long term residence and 2) if dmv is busy might take time to get it. anyway I plan to get it and go from there.

Just have it in your pocket..if the IO asks, tell the truth as you have in this forum and produce any evidence he/she wishes. Its good to have a state ID in my opinion..even if you never needed one.

dl/stateid

yeah not sure why I waited so long for it. ah well, applied for it last Monday and they said 2-4 weeks so that will be in time for whenever interview would be. I had fp done 24th nov and waiting for IL. should be set :)

Which DMV is this? Never heard of DMVs taking weeks to issue state IDs.
I just walked into the DMV, paid the application fees, got my picture taken and got the state ID. The whole process took less than half an hour.

I strongly advise you get a state ID. If you do not drive, get a non-driver state ID. Things can happen that one day you find yourself without any ID
(There is such a thread if you search).

When you get your citizenship, you can apply for a passport card. Since now you are only a PR, you better get a state ID for better protection against
the scanario that you lost your green card or passport

Out of State ID

Sir

I just got finger printed for the N-400 interview and got the "Yellow Letter" stating to bring the State ID or DL with me for the interview. I have a out of state ID because I visit it very frequently. Although I am currently not residing there. So what shall i do now?

Thanks and appreciate your reply:confused:

In some states it takes weeks if you are a noncitizen, because they take copies of your immigration paperwork and send them off for verification before issuing the ID or license.

When you get US citizenship, you will no longer have a GC, and your current passport may become invalid (if your other country does not allow dual citizenship) or otherwise mostly useless (if you are a US citizen, you are not supposed to show a foreign passport to a US government entity). It is also not a good idea to carry around the US passport on a day-to-basis. It is much more valuable to a thief or illegal immigrant if you lose it or have it stolen, than your foreign passport or GC.

I also agree with Jackolantern. This is odd and impractical. State ID is essential document for day to day needs, not just driving the car (although it is not a legal requirement).

It is also odd that the OP keeps out of state ID. This may raise a red flag about state residency issues. I wonder if OP files income tax return (assume state has income tax) in the state he/she claims to reside for this citizenship application purposes.

Out of State ID

Why do you have a out of state ID if you don't live there?

Because I travel to the other state frequesntly and stay there for extended periods of time.

I do have all the documents to prove residency from the state I have filled N-400. But still wondering if I have to get the DL.

But that is not a valid reason for keeping an out of state license*. You are violating both state's laws by keeping a license that is not from the state of your primary residence.

*Unless the state has a specific provision for residents of other states who spend extended times in the state, like the "snowbirds" who fly down from the northern states to stay for 4-5 months in the south, or members of the military who get moved from state to state. But those require you to specify those intentions when applying for the license or ID, and the license/ID often has a special notation on it.

Visiting another state and staying there for extended periods is not a reason to keep a DL from that state if you're not a resident of that state. You may have documents that show residency in your current state, but the IO may still request to see DL at interview.

Thank you. I think I should go ahead and get the local license. I called in to the DMV and they told me that there is no fine for late submission.
