Does Name change request trigger additional background/name check for the proposed name?

No, they don't do a name check on the requested name. People who didn't initially request the name change on the N-400 but requested it at the interview don't end up with USCIS ordering another name check.
However, they do run name checks on the names given in the "other names used" section.

I wonder if requesting a name change triggers additional background/name check for the requested name. I am thinking that USCIS/FBI might do that which can delay the name check process and hence the N400 process.

It depends when you request it. If you request it as part of the naturalization process it would not lead to additional background checks. If you request a name change (via federal court) prior to sending in N-400 application then you should expect additional background check if your name change was completed.
Prior names used on your application don't necessarily delay the process since the name check process is automated. Delays only occur if your name(s) come up with any matches in the FBI database that require additional manual screening.

While I was awaiting my turn to be interviewed, I heard two names called that made heads turn. The first one was Osama Something and the second one was Dunkin Something (don't recall the last names). Now, if the first guy wanted his last name changed to Bin Laden and the second guy to Donuts, then the second case would trigger a background check for copyright violation and the first one for a sanity violation.
Although both Dunkin and Osama were truly there and not characters I made up, take the above with a pinch of humor. Far be it from me to stereotype nuts and donuts.
