Customs Declaration PoE - Customs Duty?

My spouse is entering the US on a H4. At the PoE it is required to submit the Customs declaration form to the CBP.

As per the CBP website it says that visitors(non residents/citizens) need to declare approx. value of ALL commercial and personal items and that typically on the first $100 custom duty is exempt.

Any experiences on this ? My spouse would have regular clothes and stuff in her baggage and also few(regular) personal jewellery items on herself or in the handbag.

Would she be required to pay customs duty. How is it calculated. Any experiences.

Thanks

Personal items like clothing, etc. if they are used, not new, are exempt. So is personal jewellery. No need to declare them in such cases.

What happens if you carry food items and you don't declare and they found out?

I'm asking this my wife went thru this situation last Sunday and she said no "foods" and we have always been lucky and it was never a problem but this time it wasn't the same though.

They took all the raw seeds like peanuts, fenugreek, etc and she was warned and let go.

We are in GC for the past 4+ yrs and now out concerns are:

1. Would there anything go wrong with our status?
2. Would it cause any problems if we go through the citizenship process upon due?

Please let me know and your responses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

No, but they MIGHT have put a note in the system, just so that if she's caught again, then she'd have to pay a fine. For now, I think you're oke. Just declare food like that next time, or don't bring them in.

Thank you, cafeconleche.

I honestly appreciate your response and that totally makes sense for this context and our situation. We will try not to repeat this mistake in future.

Kind regards.
