You can't apply for US citizenship before you are a permanent resident for 5 years. Your first step would be to obtain a visa to enter the US. Once you have the required visa, only then can you start thinking of changing over to a permanent status.

The cartoon is pretty good.

By the way, no offense, but by the way you kept making mistakes with the word "to" and "do", are you sure your partner is dyslexic, or are you the dyslexic and are blaming your partner because he writes different than you? ;)

Furthermore, depending on what you mean by partner you should be aware that US immigration doesn't consider a same sex marriage a marriage for the purpose of immigration. Even if it is opposite sex partnership, if you are not married then each one will have to deal with his/her immigration separately.

There is no direct way to citizenship (well, the only direct way is for children of naturalizing parents who derive citizenship automatically, under certain guidelines). Typical path to citizenship for someone who doesn't have a relative with US citizenship is:

1. Diversity lottery visa ( There are some countries of birth that don't qualify)
2. Work visa, followed by application for a green card.
3. Marry a US citizen, then apply for Green Card.

Once a person attains a Green Card then there is a wait period of five (three in case of being married to US citizen) years before one can apply for citizenship.

I am surprised at the number of people who think they can come to the US, or Canada, or the UK and just start working and living. Unfortunately there is quite a lot of bureaucracy to do things the right way.

People sweat to get visa, invest time and money with long long and infinite waiting to get GC and then finally path to Citizenship.
From entering into US for the first time on Non-immigrant visa till the path of Citizenship is like what, on an average 10 years even in this, there are so many ifs and buts.

Very strange in this thread, someone is worried about citizenship test even before entering into America.

What you should really be looking is, some information on how to get job in USA, getting visa etc.... and then worry about GC and finally about Citizenship.
