When you have finished working for employer earlier than what is stated on TN Visa, do you have to inform US Custom or Immigration? How does US Custom/Immigration know that you have left the country and abiding by the rules? I have read some where that you should never over stay on expired visa.

What I have done so far is, I always go back to Toronto after couple of weeks when project I am working on commence. Whenever I change my employer, I got to POE and get new TN Visa.

Last couple of years I haven't got TN Visa. Now, how would US Immigration/Custom know that I have left US and never over stayed with expired visa? Canadian Custom knows when I have entered the country but US Customs doesn't know when I left their country.

CIS will know because you follw the instructions on your I-94 which state that you turn your I-94 to the Cdn border officer when you leave US. Then Canada gives US your I-94. Done.

When you change jobs you go to the border and get new I-94. The officer keeps the old one -- which you give to him.

So, if you follow simple instructions, all is fine. More complex ones, like for getting GC. may prove more difficult to understand, but need to be followed nonetheless.

On my last TN I got, I forgot to trun in I-94 at the Canadian border. What can I do to rectify this. It is almost 2yrs now. I know I have to prove this when I go for GC. How can I prove that I entered Canada when its time for GC? Can I get Canadian Custom letter to prove it I have left US and entered the country?

You need to keep some sort of proof that you were outside US at some point before expiry. Store receipt or something.

Pays to read your I-94, eh?

My Passport has proof that I left US because Indian Business Visa granted for me during the same time period and extends beyond TN Expiration date.
