Selective Service question

I entered the US the first time when I was 28 and on an H1B visa. I got my GC when I was 32 based on marriage to a US citizen. From what I am reading, I did not need to register for SS. Is that right? The explanation is kind of confusing since it talks about different ages such as 18-26, 26-31, 31 and over. Some has dates that if you are born after 1959 or something then you should register...what is the official word on this? It seems confusing. Please help.

If you are a male between the ages of 18-26 in the US in a status other than a non-immigrant visa you are required to register for selective service.
You came to US on non immigrant visa at age of 28, so no need to have registered. During the interview the IO will see that you were not required to register based on your age and status and not pursue the issue.

Hmmmmm some time you get rookie or new IO who might delay (not reject) the decision because of lack of understanding of this rule. I have read a few cases. Check out baltimore thread.

I would recommend getting a status letter from selective services stating that you were not required to register.

Just for information In my own case I did not had the letter from selective services (still waiting for the status letter...) but I was able to "explain" myself. I guess my IO was an experienced one.

Just try to get the letter if you do not have it by interview do not lose sleep over it.

How long do they take to respond?

My father became became a permanent resident at 52 yrs and they are asking to see his registration with the selective service. I printed a document showing that he didn't need too, but I will have him request status.

What about registering > Print screen every step > and print the confirmation. My father was born before 1960 and when I called I guess these records are kept in a different location so it takes longer to receive the letter.

They asked that at the interview, or they asked in the interview letter? If it's the letter, don't worry about it, that's just some standard text they put for most males (and even for some women!).

As far How long does it take for selective services to send a letter..... I do not know as I am still waiting (It's been about 60 days since my request and about 30 days since i became citizen).

I think if one has registered with them then they are fast otherwise not.

Interesting. I was asked that question and I said I was not aware of the Selective Service Registration. Maybe thats why the IO did not approve my N400 for oath purpose and cooked some BS about my missing H1B folder. What do I do?

If the IO were to delay your case based on you not registering for selective service he/she would have mentioned something about it instead of telling you some BS about consolidating your H1B A#.
 
I came to the US when i was 24 on tourist visa i overstayed and i am adjusting my status(I-485) and now i am 31 years old. was i ever required to register? because i did not register ( i didnt know) any problem can come out in the future because of that?

Yes, you were required to register because you went out of status. If you filed the I-485 before you turned 26, you may have already been automatically registered as part of the green card process. Follow the above link to find out if you were registered. If you weren't registered, don't worry about it, as it is unlikely they will bother you about it now that you are 31 (and if they do, remind them that you are 31 and therefore the registration period is now more than 5 years ago).
