OT - Safe deposit box

I have been advised to get a safe deposit box from a bank to safeguard important items. Does anyone know how much these cost?

Are these boxes really safe and secured ? How often can they be accessed ?

Of course, I may be able to get these info from a bank, but I prefer to have the opinion of those who have already used it in the past.

Fees vary for a box size & brand of bank, anywhere from $10.00 a month to more than $500.00 a month.

My bank charged $30/year for the smallest box. It was a metal drawer that was 1 inch high, about 10 inches wide and 18 inches long so it could store a few important papers but not any sizeable objects.

All the safe deposit boxes are in a big vault. Then each box requires two keys to open, one key that you hold and the other held by a bank manager. So even if a bank robber forced the manager to open the vault, the robber still couldn't get into your box unless they took the time and energy to physically break into it. And they usually won't do that, because they don't know if anything worth stealing is in each box, and they want to escape before the police get there.

Hehehe... Yeah, you could put in the safe deposit box. They can be accessed any time the bank is open. However, this is something that you could store there and won't be needing at night time chances are. I thnk it's up to you to determine if you feel safer with a bank or with building a vault underneath your house.
