I went to the local IRS office and submitted Form-4506T asking for a letter that states i do not owe anything to the IRS. They do not know about such a letter and instead printed several pages of my returns (10 to 20 pages for each year which contains my W2s, my tax returns etc). They even gave the form 4506 back to me stating they donot need it.

My question is: What should i ask the IRS for?
What am I supposed to get from the IRS?

Please reply soon as i am plannig to go to IRS again today. I appreciate your response.

The 4506 form is to request a copy of your tax return. For USCIS purposes, the tax transcript that the IRS provided you is sufficient and free of charge.

Why are you getting this letter? Is it because you still owed taxes when you filed the N-400? Did the IO ask for the letter in your interview?

They called Tax Return Abstracts and can be ordered by phone 800-829-1040

I tried to order all 9 years but Automated system only allowed 2006,2005,2004 so I did and then called back and spoke with rep. She first told me she can't send me anything before 2004, but then put on hold and said she was able to pull everything back to 1999.

So, I got them in mail, 2006,2005,2004 tax return abstracts and 2003,2002,2001,2000,1999 letters saying we don't have tax return abstracts for those years. Well, at least that was free.

Now, there is "photocopy of tax return" cost 39 bucks and some "account abstract" (free), so I'm trying to get "account abstract" for 1999-2003 for now, if not, I'll get just 2003 photocopy and in July IRS should have 2007 tax return abstract, that will cover 5 years of tax returns for me.

I think you just need to fax a copy of 4506-T to the fax number provided and you can get the transcript in mail in a months time. The only problem is that they provide transcript for 4 years... last year and 3 years before that. I guess I will take that and I will take a copy of what I used to file the tax for 2003.

No. I did not owe any tax when i filed N-400. I just want to be safe.

If you provide tax transcripts and don't owe anything at the time of filing nor at the time of the interview, it's 99.999% sure that they aren't going to ask for that letter. Don't waste your time hunting it down ahead of time.

Got "Tax Account Summary for Tax Year 2003" from IRS since Tax Transcripts only available back to 2004.
Well, it lists my income, tax refund for year 2003, so it should be good enough for USCIS.
Did it through automated system 800-829-1040 (yes, it's free)
