parent of GC holder

I have a friend who is a GC holder by marriage to a US citizen. She recently had to go back to Japan for a short time because her mom went through heart failure and is now in an unresponsive state.

My question (which im trying to help her out, because she doesnt have a lot of time right now, and a lot on her shoulders) is, what are the rules for bringing a parent back to the US if you are GC holder? Is there a possible way she can bring her back to the states to care for her while just being a green card holder?

Not sure if anyone can answer this question because there may be alot of factors. Hopefully someone can shed some light though.

(I know there are other factors, as in insurance, and flying her here under her condition and what not...but Im just strictily looking for the rules about a GC holder bringing a parent over. Or if there is a different condition if the parent needs to be taken care of?)

Thanks.

There is no mechanism for a Permanent Resident to sponsor his or her parents. Additionally, there is the real possibility that the parent is statutorily inadmissible on health grounds.

A green card holder can't sponsor a parent for a green card. But there are provisions that would allow a parent (or any other relative) to get a temporary visa for the purpose of medical treatment.

Not sure about the cost of hospitalization/treatment in Japan, in US without health insurance coverage, the cost of treatment is very expensive. Also getting a health insurance might not cover pre-existing conditions.

Thanks, not sure if the temp visa for health care purposes would work, because she is basically without brain function, so if she came here, she would probably be coming here for good. Too bad that a green card holder cant care for her mother in her own home if she brought her here. Just thought there might be SOME kind of way.

Sorry. If she's brain-dead then she's clearly inadmissible on health grounds. If she wants to care for her abroad, she should apply for a Re-Entry permit and see her abroad.
