Selective Service Question

I am sure that this has been asked before, but i have not been able to find the answer. On my interview notice it states i should bring selective service docs.
I moved to the US when i was 29yrs old and became a permanent resident 6 months later. I was under the impression that you registered for selective service between the age of 18 and 26.
Is this going to be a problem ? was i misinformed ?
Thanks in advance.

Since you only entered the US and obtained an immigrant visa after your 26 birthday you have nothing to worry about. The selective service is only for male applicants who were in the US (on an immigrant visa or illegally) between their 18 and 26 birthday.

Bob you seem very knowledgeable on various subjects. Do you know if USCIS and SSS are exchanging data in any way?

For example if I request status info letter and provide SSS with immigration data as requested – are they sharing/checking this info with USCIS?

Put it this way; USCIS is assuming you are providing accurate data to them. I don't know if they check with SSS to see if it's correct (someone posted that the IO called SSS to check his status during the interview since he had no documentation).
If you happen to provide false data and they later find out about it, USCIS will most likely begin denaturlization process against you.

To split this hair even further :-) what about SS registration requirement for someone who came to the US at age 22 as a student (F1); got a work visa (H1) at age 25; got a Green card at age 31.

Based on my understanding of the text on their website (www.SSS.gov) and in their Instructions- I would not have been required to register. I guess there are two questions here:
a) Were you required/exempt to register ?
b) If you were NOT- do you still need to get a Status letter from SS to take with on your Interview ?

Thanks in advance.

At the Buffalo DO, all Immigration Officers use the SSS verification web site and enter the applicant's SSN prior to the interview. The IOs are ready at the interview with a print out of the status and verify the information with the applicant.

I have asked several applicants and IOs and the story checks out.

Since F1 and H1B are non-immigrant visas, you were not required to register with SSS. Your visa status history on the application will demonstrate to USCIS that you were not required to register.

Evidence that Registration Was Not Required

Naturalization applicants need only demonstrate that they were 26 years of age or older when they first entered the United States as immigrants to prove that they were not required to register with Selective Service. Proof of an applicant's age and immigration status should be contained in the applicant's file. This evidence is all that is necessary to prove that the applicant was not required to register.

Thanks BobSmyth. It's just that most folks get paranoid (me included) for fear of finding themselves without the Status letter at the Interview even if it does not apply to them. Appreciate your input though.

No worries. Always best to be informed than to have to have unnecessary fears.:)

Does a copy of the GC with the date showing when you first became a LPR qualify as the proof for not required to register for SS?

whether a person was on a non-immigrnt visa or immigrant visa. It is advisable to get a letter from SS.
I entered USA before 26th birthday on student visa but I did take the ltter with me. I was never asked for it during the interview.

Note that when I got my interview letter I was given instructions that I do not need to bring the certify court disposition for traffic tickets u8nder $500 fine and not related DUI. During the interview I was asked about it and I had to give them certify disposition which IO put it in my file. I had minor HOV violation(first time).I showed IO instructions sent with the interview letter but I was told that it is for GC!

The point being, if IO ask for it and they can, you will need to have that information readily available. There is no point delaying/resceduling the interview. Just get the letter from SS. It doesn't weigh toomjuch to carry to the interview:D

Can please let me know, how to apply for letter from SS, which explains that they person was not in US between that age group (18-26)?
Any link, letter sample will be helpful?

Thanks very much,
Akapoor

Thanks. So, one has to just call them and request them to send a letter?
How does this work? Sorry, I am not sure here.

Thanks,
Akapoor
