Passport expiry date

My husband's passport expires April 30, 2008 and his TN expires Jan 20, 2008. We have yet to decide whether we do a border run or have his company renew it by mail; either option is a possibility.

Given that Passport Canada is processing passport apps super slow and the fact that my husband is a contractor who is unlikely to take two weeks off to go home, apply for an expediated passport etc., is this going to be detrimental to getting a new visa/renewing his current TN visa?

There is a possibility that we might be able to get his company to sponsor him for an HB-1 next spring, will his passport expiry date be an issue there too seeing as the deadline is around May 1st?
 
A valid passport is not required for getting a TN, nor for renewing one. Same for H1. What is needed is proof of citizenship, which a birth cert or citizenship card is sufficient.

So the fact that is will be expiring at some point in the near future has no bearing on this subject. I would not alter/make any palns just in an effort to secure passport for this purpose.

Base your need to get passport on other requirements, such as international travel, flying by air, etc.

If/when he does get a new pasport, simply put the current I-94 in the new one.

This is NOT the same issue as those needing 6 months of passport validity to get a visa. Cdns don't get visas, and, as I said, passport is not reqwuired for Cdns to enter US in a particualr status.
 
The current passport processing time is 15 weeks for Canadian live in US. So be prepare to apply new passport now. Because you can't travel in 6 months before expiration date.
 
You can go to TO and in two days you will get it if you tell them you work in the states and show them a return ticket. I did that after the mailed in was returned to me because they said the picture does not have a stamp of the photographer and date.
 
I travel in May 2006 and my passport was expiring in June 2006 and I didn't have any problem. And I asked for a new TN visa and the expiration date on my passport wasn't a problem. It's only now I have to wait to have my new passport but anyway if you send a demand before or after the expiration date doesn't make any difference because you have to send the passport to replace (expired or not) with your request than you are 3-4 months without travelling by plane...
 
Just to correct, once your PP is expired you do NOT need to submit it with your new PP application.

You went to "TO"=Toronto? Renew or get a new passport? The web said Canadian live abroard can't renew.

"The web" -- whatever that is -- is wrong. So long as you are willing to fly up and than also pick it up when the application is processed, you are allowed.

What they will not do is allow you to mail it in and then pick it up, nor bring it in to an office and then mail it back to you.
