is it a bad idea to apply for a conceal carry permit before naturalization?

I talked to the state police and they told me that once a permit is issued, my name will be noted in their system, which may or may not be linked to a national data system. If I get pulled over or something, the trooper's computer will indicate that I was permitted to carry.

It occured to me that when the USCIS runs a background check, this may also come up? Or am I worrying too much?(since I'm applying for the permit by the book, in a perfectly legal/constitutional way) :)

thanks!

Legally I see no problem, but possibly it may attract extra unwanted attention during interview. Personally I avoided joining the NRA before citizenship, 'cos I didn't want to have to list that on my N-400.

There should be no problem since your name will not be in a criminal list.
The reason state police need to know concel carry permit is so they know in advance if a person they pulled over for routine traffic stop is armed or not. In texas once you have a concealed weapon carry permit, you are required to hand the permit over to the cop when asked for drivers license, even if you are not carrying the weapon on you.

Hi there!

I have been a NRA member and have had a concealed carrying permit for a couple of years (Virginia). No problem during my citizenship application. I asked after the interview if the concealed carrying permit was a reason for being stuck in the name check. They said no. A concealed carrying permit does not trigger a FBI record. It is something else if you apply for a FBI permit for an assault rifle ;-).

Cheers!

Thanks! I guess I have nothing to worry about... :)

I'm a firm believer in the right to bear arms, aka the 2nd Amendment. :) In fact, it is one of the top three reasons I decided to move to the US, and hopefully become a citizen soon.

Same here... though I must say it's irritating the average joe can't get a carry permit in Maryland. The rules aren't quite as bad as some other states, but its still not going to happen unless you are politically connected or work in law enforcement or similar.

Should not have a problem

We are required to carry a gun by law in Kennesaw, Georgia. I don't see a problem. Most people carry Guns in South.

You HAVE to carry a gun! Even the children and woman?
Now THAT must be a tense place to live!

Here in VA (I am in Fairfax County) it is a 'shall issue' law. Unless you are a convicted felon or have been legally declared incompetent, they have to issue you a concealed carrying permit.

Cheers!

Actually, Kennesaw, GA is the Safest City in Atlanta Suburb. Infact, one of the Safest City in the Country.

Yes. Every adult is required to carry a gun. Even Woman. Not children.

Politicians cliam that Kennesaw city is safe because of the fire arms and rest of the country should do the same.

Any way, point is that Applying for a gun in this country is a privelage and is not bad for record. Just my opinion.

does the law only require residents to carry gun, or are they also obligated to shoot any armed intruders into their homes? :)

Sometimes I wish I lived in the South. Next to Chicago, New York has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation.
