May I have some questions here, and wish all immigration gurus can answer it for me.
Thanks!

I got Greencard on 10/10/2001
I worked at an IT company from 1999 to Oct, 2005 in the States(so, I have W2 tax records for the past 5 years)...Then, I started my own business, and have been traveling between Asia and the States for many times.

1. When I can apply citizenship?
2. Must apply N-400 by person? or I can fill it out today, and send it out by
a friend(if I am not in the States)?
3. Many friends suggest that I'd better not leave the States between
sending out N-400 and fingerprinting(about 2 months in Minnesota).
The other said I'd better not leave the States after fingerprinting(about
3 months in Minnesota). Which is coorect?
4. If I must leave the States when I applying citizenship, what's the
maximium period(how many months)?
4. Since I left the IT company for a health reason(hypothyroid), I took 2
months 'unemployment insurance'. Will it cause any problem on interview?

Thanks for all gurus help!

it depends on if you fulfill all requirements

the n400 will need to be sent via mail. Who send the application out? who cares.

No

1 - http://uscis.gov/graphics/services/natz/English.pdf

2 - not sure how you obtained your GC and so would be hard to
determine if you could indeed apply today or not.
again look in the guide referenced in 1 and go thru all the
scenarios listed there. Assuming it's thru employment, you are
not qualified to apply for the same as of today.

3 - depends on the processing time in your region/DO. rescheduling
any FP or interview appointment will add insurmountable delay,
hassle and personal pain if not anything else..you need to be
present for FP, interview and then oath and then for the passport..
(so, I am not sure if 2 or 3 is the correct answer. would be anywhere
from 6-9 months typically but it's ok to travel after filling the form
anywhere as long as you can be back for your FP, interview and
oath but do keep track of the continuous physical presence
requirement - page 22 of the above guide referred to in 1)

4. - http://uscis.gov/graphics/services/natz/general.htm
(Residence and Physical Presence)

Also refer to the guide in 1. It has everything you need to know

5 (last question) - don't think that it would be a problem..

BTW, in future atleast try to google around to find answers to such basic questions on this forum rather than dumping yet another set of basic questions as listed above.

1. When I can apply citizenship?

Starting 90 days before 10/10/2006 assuming you meet the permanent residency requirements.

2. Must apply N-400 by person? or I can fill it out today, and send it out by a friend(if I am not in the States)?

By mail. Anyone can drop the application in the mail.

3. Many friends suggest that I'd better not leave the States between sending out N-400 and fingerprinting(about 2 months in Minnesota).

The only problem is that you should make sure you get the Fingerprint notice and the Interview notice and, of course, you don't miss the appointments. So, if someone you trust can get your mail and let you know about the appointments and you can come back on a short notice, you should be OK.

4. If I must leave the States when I applying citizenship, what's the maximium period(how many months)?

I'll say less than 6 months (considering the answer to your qustion #3)

4. Since I left the IT company for a health reason(hypothyroid), I took 2 months 'unemployment insurance'. Will it cause any problem on interview?

No.

Thanks for all gurus help!
