I should have my green card in the mail in a few days.

I was thinking of traveling to Europe soon.

Should I apply for a Refugee Travel Document (which I think needs to be renewed annually) or Re-Entry Permit (good for 2 years, i think)?

thx!

If would travel, it would be for no longer than 2 months (Europe). Could this become a problem when applying for citizenship?

According to my GC plastic: Resident Since 07/19/2004

I'd like apply for citizenship asap, which is going to be 07/19/2009.

Could getting a 2-year re-entry permit and using it for only a 2-month trip outside of US result in delaying my eligibility to become a citizen?

After Long wait --Finally asylumguy got his GC--He deserve Lots of Drinks.
Cheers Buddy-- :D

Don't stay away more than 6 months per trip to preserve your continuous residence requirement for the citizenship. Enjoy Europe!

asylumguy,

you bring up a valid point. I would advise that you keep your re-entry permit and submit all the pages (with visas/stamps) when applying for your citizenship - as well as putting it down in the application. If you can prove your trips then I don't see any problems.

I applied for a re-entry permit because it is cheaper in the long run. I just plan on holding on to it and proving that I haven't used it. Ironically I haven't gone overseas - just Canada. As far as staying out - a person could do it with a refugee travel document so I don't see that arguement. So following your logic, applying for a travel document would delay citizenship because it insinuates that you have gone abroad. Keep in mind that you are responsible ONLY for the 5 years which you are a permenant resident - all the time before does not count for citizenship.

Simple rule is after you get your GC, you need to be in the country(u.s ofcourse) for 30 months(from 2004-2009) and no absence for more than 6 months.

You should apply for your citizenship on March or APril 2009..4 years 8 months after your GC permanent resident date.
