will I not be allowed to leave the US for a few weeks after my oath ceremony?

I was just talking to my family about our summer travel plans.

Since I will most like have my N400 interview in July or August,
should I not make any travel plans?

Let's says my interview is on July 1 and I take my oath on the
same day... then I immediately go to the post office to apply
for a US passport. I assume the passport can take anywhere
from 2 to 8 weeks to process.... Doesn't this essentially mean
that I cannot leave the US?(or more precisely, have no way
of returning?)

Thanks! :)

You have to have a US passport to leave and re-enter US. You don't necessarily have to apply for your passport at the post office. Depending where you are, you could go to the nearest passport office, show them your confirmed tkts and get your passport made that very same day.

If you are in NY you can get it done probably same day.-

There are several businesses that over same day passport service. Even expedited service through the post office can get you a passport is a few days. Just remember that the fee will be more for expedited service.

so basically, you don't have to go to the post office to get a passport?
So you can go the same day after you did you oath and get it done at any passport office?

Is that right?

thanks

Yes sir

Yes, you got that one right. Now depending what time you get done with your oath that day. If your oath ceremony is in the afternoon, in that case you may have to apply for your passport the next morning.

Bobsmyth you suggested applying thru a post office. It's a good idea as long as the applicant is willing to wait a week to 10 days. Post offices don't guarantee the exact time or date but will give you an approx date. I suggest if you need to fly in the next 24-48 hrs, passport office is the place you need to go and apply. This way you won't have to wait for the mailman everyday and your natz certificate may not come with your passport, lots of issues.

Yes, provided you have confirmed tickets for international travel within 14 days. You need to call them up in advance and schedule an appointment.
