Will I get a Green Card Stamp without a passport?

My passport may expire before it comes time to get the stamp for temporary approval of my green card.

Will I get a stamp on a temporary paper card, or will they require a passport?
How long does it take after the stamping to get the actual green card?

I assume that as long as I do not leave the country from the time I receive the stamp until I get the actual green card, that I would be ok. Is this a true assumption?

You do need the passport to get the stamp. They dont even allow you to enter the building without showing the PP and the approval letter.
It takes only one day to renew the passport in the indian consulate. Why don\'t you do that?

if your passport is expiring,

it is advisable to get it renewed before you go out there for your stamping.

I had sent my PP to houston and got new PP (for 10 yrs) in 2 weeks.
