My wife is currently here in the US on a H4 status(H4 visa expired but has not left the country to get a renewal and has an extension approved for 3 years). We are looking at a school program that will require her to switch to J1 status since it involves her doing an internship for almost a year as part of the program. I am wondering if someone could advice me on
1) Will she have to leave the country to switch to J1 status or can she apply while here and move on with the program?
1) Once she graduates can she switch back to H4 or does she have to go through the waiver process for the 2 year home stay?
2) We are from India can someone advice me on how long is the entire waiver process taking these days?
Any guidance will be appreciated.
