Why Three Original APs

Generally INS gives us three original APs, so ...

Why do we need 3 copies of AP? One for INS, one for airline, one for ourself?

Do we must give our old I-94s to an airline when we leave the USA? When does this happen? When getting a boarding pass or on board?

Could somebody detail the entire procedure from leaving to returning for us? I have been living this country for 10 year and this is my first time to visit my old country, so I am a little bit rusty.

Thanks

Entire process?
Hand out stuff when asked for. Have a copy of I485 receipt just in case.
Have photocopies of first page to give out to airlines (if you have more than 1). File new I94 while coming back.
You will be asked to go through a second inspection when entering US.
Make sure you retain at least one copy of AP with stamp after finishing immigration while coming back.

Just wanted to share.
My wife just came back from India. She had 2 original APS.
INS officer stamped one and returned both of them along with new I-94.She was taken to different section to complete this process. That was very straightforward process..only asked her to show passport and APS...no question asked.

Thanks

confusion...

In case somebody is confused that why some have 2 pages and others 3- one is the new format another old. Service centers and date of approval determine the format.
Even if it is 2 pages, all my caveats apply. It is a precaution. Not all my recommendations are mandatory...
