Why does the officer ask whose car is this?

Hi Guys,

When we go from US to Canada, they Canadian officer always asks whose car is this. I am NOT sure if there is a reason for such a question.

I have mostly travelled in Rent a Car and they let us go, without even looking for documents to enter Canada(Yes, this has happened as I said I have PR Card and they did NOT even check it).

What happens if I say it is my own car and I plan to stay for about a month in Canada? Would they note the number and track it? Also, is it OK to drive a US number plate car in Canada for few months?

I have crossed into Canada 30-40 times by land in the last few years. Never ever have I beed asked whose car it is. I have entered Canada through 7 different POEs and in 4 different cars. I guess now I have jinxed myself.
You can drive a US registered car in Canada as long as you are not a Canadian resident.

Some of the crossings were before I became a Canadian citizen. Some were while I was a Canadian PR. Luck of the Irish I guess :)
