Some more words about old forum.
Check for posts by Shalinin, Barb, Ciba, Fobos, Rajamony, Brother.

And look for threads where there are many replies, most good discussions were long. :o) Also try search for "RFE", "Request for evidence", etc., since it is when people realized and corrected many mistakes of initial filing.
Just to start with, check these:
12/10/99 05:32 PM
12/9/99 03:26 PM
1/17/00 05:19 PM
2/3/00 02:24 PM
2/27/00 05:06 PM
2/24/00 01:37 AM
2/29/00 00:58 AM (Just beware of attorney Thomas Jones mentioned here! :o))
3/6/00 06:24 PM
3/1/00 09:22 PM
3/23/00 12:31 PM

Sorry if some of them are less useful.
Good luck!

Hi guys,
I had self petitioned for EA by myself and have received a RFE. I am looking for some advice on how to answer the RFE.
My particulars are as follows
1) Ph.D in organic chemistry, worked a post-doc in one of the top US university for a year and then spent two years in Germany as a Alexander Humboldt Fellow and again now working as a post-doc in US in the medicinal chemistry department(apparently I am working in the organic chemistry area of medicinal chemistry). I am synthesizing compounds that are anti-HIV agents.I have completed 14 months in this area and I am yet to get a paper in this area, I have got some interesting results but it will take some more time to get published. My adviser has clearly written about my work in his reference letter which I submitted along with my original application.
The RFE is ( I am using the same wordings that has been used by INS) that the documentation submitted with the petition (including that pertaining to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellowship), indicates that you are an accomplished researcher in organic chemistry. The importance of the research in which you are currently engaged is readily apparent. However, it is not apparent that you have the level of acclaim required for this visa classification.
They have also written as follows
Please submit any available additional evidence that would address the issue of your standing in the field of chemistry in terms of sustained national or international acclaim, such as, if applicable, any published material about your achevements and career. You may also provide additional information about how the evidence already submitted demonstrates that you have the requisite level of sustained acclaim.
The point I would like to know is whether I should explain to them that though I am working in the medicinal chemistry area I am still in my organic chemistry and should let them know that these two areas medicinal chemistry and orgainc chemistry so closely interrelated, often there exists no boundary between them. I would appreciate very much if someone could shed some light on this.
Thanks Arun.

I don\'t think the INS really cares about the difference between organic and medicinal chemistry (there is not much in fact), unless they ask about it directly in the RFE. They want to read words (not implications!) that you are the best thing after sliced bread, as someone said at this forum. :o)) I beleive they just want more info that you are "extraordinary", "outstanding", "one of the top 3-5% in your field", "have sustained international acclaim" etc.
2-3 letters from people who DID NOT work with you directly containing such wording will help. To show international acclaim, get letters from different countries. As some people advised at this forum, don\'t be shy to ask people who cited your articles, or at least those whom you cited. Some of them will refuse while others will write letters for you. They also feel themselves more significant when they are asked to write expert letters. Also you can reemphasize and re-cite the most favorable words from already submitted documents.
You can also get a letter from Humboldt Foundation, or simply statistical info about how many applicants were competing for the fellowship, and how many of them were awarded. The numbers will be really impressive! Point out, it is a very prestigious INTERNATIONAL award, provide requirements for the applicants, let someone to state this fact in a support letter. Go to their web page (I know for sure, there is a link from www.DAAD.de) Or try to get their annual report (it was easy to get a similar one from DAAD from their US reps). I am sure the INS clerks have no idea what Humboldt fellowship is. So explain them in plain English and simple numbers.

Good luck, you should be all right with your background.

Hi OOA,
Thanks for your reply. I will try to get some more letters from different people and also I will try to explain in details about some of the things which I have already included in my application. The fact is that I did not explain any thing about my work or any thing like that in my previous covering letter. May be I have to boast myself and write bla, bla. and let us see. I will also try to get some letters from the people who have cited my papers.
Thanks, Arun.
