White Passport

Hello all,
Could you please elaborate about the white passport? As DV2014 winners, can we apply for white passport? If yes, when should we apply and how long does it take to get one? The point is that we want to see how to postpone our moving date to states for 2 years without putting our GC in danger.
Thanks for your inputs in advance.

It's a permit to re-enter, or re-entry permit: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/us...nnel=db029c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

You have to travel to the US and activate your permanent residence status before your visa expires first (all of you have to go). Then, you all have to send in the applications while you're in the US, make sure CIS receives it, and then, you have two options:

1. You wait a couple of weeks for the fingerprint letter, go to your appointment (or earlier - this works sometimes), and then leave the country and wait for the permit to be sent to the US consulate in your country, or

2. Once CIS gets the application, you can all leave the country. Someone must check your mail in the US for the fingerprint letters. You must all then travel to the US to give your fingerprints, and then you can leave again.

You must have an address in the US where they can send the fingerprint letter.

Thank you Cafeconleche. How long the re-entry permit will be valid for? will I lose my GC when applying for re-entry permit? are we still able to come to US and return on a regular basis?

Thank you for this information. I was aware that you applied from the US for a re-entry permit, but didn't know you then had to wait and attend an appointment. Does anyone know the approximate timeline for this from application to being able to leave the country? I am only thinking hypothetically here as should I get chosen, I will have to return to Australia to finish my degree.

The point of the permit is so that you DON'T lose your GC. It's valid for 2 years once it's issued, so in reality, you can stay outside the US for longer than 2 years since it takes a few months for them to issue the permit, and you could already be outside the US during the processing time. And, yes, you can come and go to the US as many times in the 2 years as you like. It's actually better that you do. Also, make sure to try and get a driver license, bank account, and other "ties" to the country. They help establish your intention to return.

It's called a white passport for some reason, but it is blue/green.

If you follow the EXPEDITE procedure, you might get the process done much quicker. Going to study abroad usually works as a reason if you write the cover letter well.
