Which is valid I-94? I-797 and Departure Card

Hi Folks,
Recently, me and my wife went to Ottawa, Canada for H1 and H4 visa stamping? During our entry in to United States, the Border Immigration officer issued a new I-94 and he also stapled the I-94 from I-797 approval notices to our passports. Both these numbers are different. We are wondering which is the valid I-94 number that we need to use for I-485 application.

The I-94 form attached with the approval notice was for interim use. Once you go out of U.S. the immigration authority takes this one as departure record. For travel to Canada this is an exception and thus you still have this. During re-entry to the U.S. after visa re-validation, you will get a new I-94. I would use this for my I-485 application.
