When to use EAD

I recently entered the US using my AP inspite of having a valid H1B. The officer at port of entry said that since I have a AP i would have to use that instead of my visa. I was in no mood to argue after a looong flight and conceded.
My question is since I have entered using an AP do I need to tell my employer that I wont be working on a H1B but on an EAD?
What difference does it make to the employer what document I am working on.

If you have valid H1B at present with current employer (not the stamp but status) you can still continue working on H1B evenif you entered US using AP.
