there is a EAD advisory on immigration-law website since EAD may take long. Also 90 days past ur ead receipt date you can get an interim ead, so u do not have to STOP working.
Yes if you are working on EAD and do not want to interrupt - apply at least 3.5 but better 4 months in advance.
If you just want to have it and not sure when starting to use - you may apply later...
