When to Apply 7th year? Please help.

Here is my situation:

First entered U.S. - Mar 30th 1999
Six year expire - Mar 30th 2005
Current H1 (second ext. same employer) Valid till - Dec 15th 2004

lawyer saying if you file now (which we can because we are within 6 month
of expiry) then I will only get extension till Mar 30th 2005 and then we will
have to refile for another 1 yr. extension.

He is suggesting file after Sep 30th will give a lot better chance to get an extension till Mar 30th 2006 (which will include 7th yr extension) because after Sep 30th I will be within six months of 6yr. expiry limit.

Please suggest? Is it better to wait or would be ok to file now for seventh yr. what are the chances I will get 7th yr. extension if we file now?

I am in California. Please suggest.
