When Should I File N400

Is it this forum's opinion that USCIS prefers Interviews / Oaths etc. aren't rescheduled by an applicant? I ask because I have been eligible to file my N400 since 5/17/04, but have been holding off due to the fact I am planning a trip abroad mid Dec thru early Jan. My DO is San Francisco and current timelines look to be between 4-6 months roughly. Do anyone have any input regarding this matter?

It really does not matter. I doubt rescheduling will cause any trouble except teh delay itself and delaying filing N-400 is delay anyway.

Wong, I would be reluctant to reschedule. I have read about a thousand posts here over the past month and rescheduled ones are often asking how much longer they should wait before inquiring where they are at in the system.

So, if I were you, I would postpone the trip until after the Oath date or postpone the filing until after the trip.

The USCIS is a huge system and big wheels turn slowly. Stepping outside their schedule system may cause more delays.

I am guessing, but when it is your turn for say the FP appointment, your name just goes on the bottom of that list. When you reschedule, someone has to find a rescheduled open slot to slide you in for the date you requested.

Also there may be a bunch of people that have asked to reschedule and you may in the middle of that list somewhere. Get the drift? You are likely to compound the delays but ultimately up to you.

My suggestion is to go with the flow.
 
Thank you both for your replies / input. I'll take them both into consideration before deciding on next steps. I'm seeing some folks from SF getting through the system in 3 months, but that obviously doesn't mean it'll happen in my case as well.

If things are moving quickly and your application is pretty straightforward then I would probably lodge as soon as possible, UNLESS, the trip cannot be missed then I guess after the trip makes sense. Read the last postings in the "Fingerpint" thread. Arturo may have abandoned his application by missing the FP notice and rescheduling in time.

Good luck and keep your priorities clear. Citizenship IS a big deal.
 
Thanks Brian. I will not miss the FP notice no matter what - given timelines and my pending trip, I might need to reschedule the interview and/or oath in a worst case scenario.
